Some say she sounds like Grace Slick, others say Tracy Chapman. When you draw those comparisons, you know you've done something right. California via Boston singer-songwriter Petrina Foley, formerly of the Boston band Oddway, has this voice that can hang right with the alt-rock landscape her band creates, and then she can seamlessly slide back into a folksy, soulful singer. Shifting between alt-rock and alt-country worlds is something Petrina Foley has mastered. She has a five-song EP out now called Proper Goodbye and is available here and on iTunes for $3. Yes, $3. Your Starbucks coffee can wait another day. Have Proper Goodbye for breakfast instead. And be on the lookout for a full-length album later this year. And if you're in West Hollywood March 25, head to The Viper Room Lounge to see Foley live.

Petrina Foley's Debut EP "Proper Goodbye" was one of Metronome Magazine's Top 5 Albums for April 2009!

Boasting a rock & roll delivery and edginess that rivals that of Melissa Etheridge (with a little more oomph), Petrina Foley manages to impress with her debut CD "Proper Goodbye". With an usually dark, versatile, spot-on voice, Foley evokes vivid imagery, with her well thought-out lyrics and fiery rock & roll arrangements. Backed by the superb musicianship of guitarist Brad McCarthy, bassist Sean McLaughlin and drummer Mike Levesque, these players prove to be a contemporary supporting force to be reckoned with. Levesque and McLaughlin are a formidable rhythm section while McCarthy's fretboard work is solid and tasteful throughout. The addition of Foley's vision and voice pushes this act over the edge. The songs "To Be Heard From" and "All This Time" should make for great college and AOR radio listening. Excellent!

Old Bands Die, New Bands Are Born

Bands are coming and going all the time, but sometimes we forget that the musicians in them stick around and keep working. The Yardbirds gave birth to Led Zeppelin. Nirvana gave way to The Foo Fighters. The list goes on. The pace of this is just as rapid with independent bands on OurStage. Two bands in particular have been shaken up recently but their musicians are getting ahead in the world anyway: The Shapes and Oddway.

Oddway was OurStage’s first Grand Prize Winner, back in March of 2007. They also won one other channel and had four Top 10 finishes. As an early OurStage celebrity, they got a lot of attention after doing so well on the site right out of the gates. After July 2007 though, the band had had enough and frontwoman Petrina Foley backed out-but she’s definitely better for it. She is now running a very successful solo career as an Americana singer/songwriter. She’s #1 in the Americana channel as of publishing time, and she also won the September 2008 Americana channel. She played in the Boston Showcase Night at The Paradise Rock Club in November after that, and is continuing to rise on her great merits as a singer/songwriter.

From Boston, Massachusetts Petrina Foley is an amazing and powerful vocalist who creates beautiful music that shares honest emotion. Originally from the past band project oddway and known as a contributor to the camilo project, she has been in the process of creating her very own debut solo cd “The Proper Goodbye ep”, scheduled for release in fall 2008. Recently, Petrina recorded live and acoustically at 37 ft productions, for what will soon be shared and heard over the next week as musicisart’s the mia sessions.

Oddway Review

*away from the everyday* is the stunning album by oddway, from boston, singer petrina foley has a familiar voice that is able to penetrate your soul. her vocal progression with oddway’s guitarists ryan ordway and josh amara, bassist mat maier and drummer jeff armstrong is beautiful to watch as something different and hidden shows in the way each compliments one another. for the last few years, they’ve matured, diversified and experimented with comfortable sounds of distant organs and mandolins, natural grooves of golden reggae tones and passionate levels of eclectic rock that signal all their heartfelt energy left to give.

"...Boston-based Oddway, with their hypnotic reggae/rock flavored pop tune "Letter", was awarded the first ever monthly grand prize of $5,000..."
"...In addition to the $5,000 grand prize, OurStage has also arranged to have Oddway spotlighted in the upcoming CMJ New Music Report, and to release a track of one of their top songs in the CMJ Monthly Music CD sampler..."
